EVENT INFORMATION


400 of the top Junior Boy and Girl ropers ages 19 and under from around the country comes to the Lazy E Arena and rope 1,278 head of cattle for over $60,000 in cash and prizes!  Roy Cooper’s World Championship Jr. Calf Roping was designed specifically for juniors and featured six different divisions of competition in this one-time-a-year event. The event showcases non-stop roping action for three straight days. Each day starts at 9:00AM but the main event is the 19 and under World Championship Junior Tie-Down Roping. All contestants rope three-head of livestock – times are tabulated and the top 16 advance to elimination ropings which drop the 2 slow ropers each round until the championship match which determines the champion.

CHASE WILLIAMS TAKES HOME GOLD

at the 25th Anniversary of the Roy Cooper World Jr. Championship

 

July 11, 2009, Guthrie, OK   -      The 25th Annual Roy Cooper World Championship Junior Calf Roping came to a close Saturday afternoon  when Stephenville, TX cowboy Chase Williams roped the last calf of the event to win the Championship and $1,657. In addition to the pile of money, Williams proudly received a gold World Championship buckle from Montana Silversmtihs and a hand-tooled Championship saddle from Cactus Saddlery. The Roy Cooper Championship is regarded as one of the top junior events in the country and was well represented by contestants from across the United States over the 3-day competition at the Lazy E Arena.

 

In the 19 and Under division, every contestant competed on three head of cattle. The top 16 in the average qualified back for the “Elimination Rounds” which drops the slow two ropers each round until a champion is determined. Fighting Williams for the championship was Clayton Shaw of Alvord, TX. Both ropers held tough and in the final match, Williams roped his calf (.66) faster than Shaw. The eighteen-year-old Williams said he needed this win. “I have not been drawing well and this weekend I went back to my ‘old faithful’ roping horse and it all came back together,” Williams said. “This is a great win that I will remember for the rest of my life.”

 

Three-hundred and seventy-seven (377) of the top Junior Boy and Girl ropers ages 19 and under from around the country came to the Lazy E Arena and roped 1,278 head of cattle for over $53,000 in cash and prizes!  Roy Cooper’s World Championship Jr. Calf Roping was designed specifically for juniors and featured six different divisions of competition in this one-time-a-year event. Champions were crowned in the following divisions. Along with money earnings, each champion won a Roy Cooper custom-made Cactus Championship saddle.

 

12 and Under Boys and Girls Breakaway Roping

(69 Ropers - $5,882.97 Purse)

12 and Under Boys Tie-Down Roping

(51 Ropers - $4,317.00 Purse)

Champion: WESTYN HUGHES Caldwell, TX / Total Earnings: $1,654.86

 

13-15 Girls Breakaway Roping

(35 Ropers - $3,520.00 Purse)

Champion: KORY ANN McCUISTON Geronimo, OK / Total Earnings: $645.64

 

13-15 Boys Tie-Down Roping

(68 Ropers - $6,952.00 Purse)

Champion: CLAYTON COLLMORGAN Lufkin, TX / Total Earnings: $1,020.02

 

19 and Under Girls Breakaway Roping

(86 Ropers - $8,824.00 Purse)

Champion: ROBI JO INMAN Ketchum, OK / Total Earnings: $1,588.71

 

19 and Under World Championship Junior Tie-Down Roping

(68 Ropers - $14,288.00 Purse)

Champion: CHASE WILLIAMS Stephenville, TX / Total Earnings: $1,657.41
